Student Life: Lockers, Athletic Teams, Middle School Advisory Program & 12 Tribes of Trinity, Embracing Diversity

Lockers

Middle school students will be assigned a locker for the purpose of storing personal belongings needed for the school day. Because of the high level of trust that exists among our school community members, locks will not be necessary on lockers. Lockers are shared school property so they must be kept in good condition. Students may create displays in their lockers so long as they create no permanent changes to the locker and they uphold the values of our community. Items left outside of lockers in common spaces are subject to confiscation and removal to the Lost & Found. Oversized musical instruments are to be stored in the Music Room and athletic equipment should be stored in the locker room with lockers assigned by the Athletic Director.

Athletic Teams

Students in grades six through eight are eligible to participate on a variety of teams representing the School in athletic events with other schools. While we field competitive teams and play our best, winning at all costs is not our aim. Healthy competition, exemplary sportsmanship, life lessons born of the field or court, a sense of team, fun and an opportunity to grow as athletes are just as, if not more, important. Practices and games are scheduled after school and coaches are drawn from the ranks of faculty and parents alike. The year is broken into three seasons with sports opportunities for boys and girls in each. Check our website for details about team activities including maps to competitor schools. See page 42 for the Athletic Department Handbook.

Middle School Advisory Program

Each middle school student is assigned to an advisory group called Koinonia (a Greek word used in the New Testament meaning fellowship of the Spirit) that consists of 10-12 middle school students and an adult advisor from the staff. The group meets several times each week. The primary purposes of the group are to ally each student with one adult who tends to the development of that student and to give students the opportunity to explore life in community. The Koinonia leader works closely with family and other faculty members to ensure a holistic understanding of each student.

The 12 Tribes of Trinity

Each student in third- through fifth-grade is a member of a Tribe consisting of 10-12 fellow students and one Tribe leader from the faculty. The Tribe meets weekly for activities that reinforce Trinity values and further our community goals. Think of Tribes as a junior advisory program in which students practice the skills necessary for community life.

Embracing Diversity

We aim to ground our students in an enduring commitment to the richness of diversity. In order to achieve that goal we choose an annual diversity theme around which we can dialog, visit, learn, share, create, discuss, question, and get inspired. As a result, we hope to enrich the TES community and all of its members to feel equipped to embrace diversity more fully. In addition a variety of programming options are developed as a timely response to TES community issues as they arise.
